Last week, a friend of ours complained about a damaged Lightning port on his iPhone 8. By coincidence, we’d been using a USB-C based Qi charger from Choetech for the last couple of weeks. Time to report on this device!
A lot of people like Qi chargers because it avoids fiddling with cables. Although Apple has been doing great in equipping their laptops with USB-C, the iPhones and iPads are still using their proprietary Lightning connector and port. Since the iPhone 8 however, the phones can be charged with any Qi charger. A lot of Android phones have had this feature for years of course.
The pad itself is small but sturdy. It’s equipped with four rubber strips so your phone won’t shift too much. These do definitely help; in the past four weeks I haven’t woken up to a phone that had shifted and not charged. It’s a bit of a shame that similar dots/strips aren’t placed on the bottom.
On the front of the charging pad, a LED is located. Its light is faint. I like this, because it does not need to be covered when you put the charger on your night stand.
On the back is the USB-C port. We tested it with a number of cables and chargers, and are happy to report that it’s not picky. Every combination we tried, has worked with the Choetech.
As for the packaging, there is nothing really remarkable about it. We ordered the charger from AliExpress (link at the bottom) and the trip from China caused it to arrive slightly crumpled, but who cares? It’s cheap and it works.
There seem to be two versions of this charger.
The one we tested, was ordered from AliExpress. Its output is limited to 5 watts. When connected to a decent charger, it’ll actually pull 6 watts — probably because Qi charging is not very efficient. We measured this with a Satechi USB-C power meter.
If you need to quickly charge, you probably want the fast charging version from Amazon (link below). But for your night stand, or for your desk at work, the cheaper version is a great charger.
