An alternative to MagSafe

Before USB-C, Apple’s MacBooks have always come with a MagSafe charger. The charging bit connected magnetically to the laptop, so if a person or a pet walked by your laptop and tripped over the power supply cord, the connector would simply break away.

The MagNeo pre-production model

On the 12″ MacBook and the “Late 2016” MacBook Pros, these have been replaced with USB-C. We think that’s a decent trade-off. However if you’ve got pets or young children, or you’re a college student or have work in different locations, we suggest the following fixes.

As for the cable, there’s the Griffin BreakSafe cable. There are several design issues with this cable. Firstly, it doesn’t carry data so there’s nothing standards compliant about this cable. And secondly, it’s not really comparable to MagSafe in the sense that the “nub” with the actual connector is pretty big. We see it more like a regular connector that happens to be able to safely break in two. An alternative is the MagNeo cable, which aims to solve any issues with the Griffin BreakSafe. MagNeo is a Kickstarter project that’s now available for pre-order. Production has been delayed a couple of times, but there’s a reputable company behind the product. In their last update, delivery was expected around the 1st of June 2017.

Besides a magnetic cable, we suggest a decent hardshell. We’ve got the Fintie, and it’s pretty good. There’s a version for the Late 2016 MacBook Pro 13″ version and 15″ version.

And finally, check your insurance. The purchase insurance of your credit card might offer protection, plus your contents insurance may cover it (but make sure and call your insurer).
